“Persons who have accustomed themselves to a rich, highly stimulating diet have an unnatural taste, and they cannot at once relish food that is plain and simple. It will take time for the taste to become natural and for the stomach to recover from the abuse it has suffered. But those who persevere in the use of wholesome food will, after a time, find it palatable. Its delicate and delicious flavors will be appreciated, and it will be eaten with greater enjoyment than can be derived from unwholesome dainties. And the stomach, in a healthy condition, neither fevered nor overtaxed, can readily perform its task.” – Ellen G. White, The Ministry of Healing, pp. 298, 299

Interesting blog. I too am a Filipino and recognize some of the descriptions of the foods. I also noticed you quote Ellen G. White often. I assume this is with the belief she practiced much of her own eating habits that she taught as well as the belief she refrained from eating “what she taught as unclean meats”. I have read White’s writings and have seen she allows exceptions to her health rules, for herself. At the same time I have seen her take others to task when they broke her rules; apparently this people were unaware she broke the rules herself.

While I am unaware of the original publication date, E.G. White wrote in, Ministry of Healing, p. 317 “Is it not time that all should aim to dispense with flesh foods? How can those who are seeking to become pure, refined, and holy, that they may have the companionship of heavenly angels, continue to use as food anything that has so harmful an effect on soul and body?”

But in 1969 she wrote, “I have not changed my course a particle since I adopted the health reform. I have not taken one step back since the light from heaven upon this subject first shone upon my pathway. I broke away from everything at once, from meat and butter, and from three meals. ….I left off those things from principle. I took my stand on health reform from principle.” (E.G. White, Testimonies, Vol. 2, pp. 371-372.)

Yet there seems to be several occasion on record afterwards that show she persisted in eating fish chicken, meat, eggs, butter, oysters. I thought it particularly interesting that she condemned others for doing so and even wrote in her defense, “I do not preach one thing and practice another. I do not present to my hearers rules of life for them to follow while I make an exception in my own case…” ( E.G. White, Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 305.)

I found some of these quotes and citations on http://bit.ly/Contradictions_on_Diet and verified them with the Owners of White’s Material. Not sure if you have seen this.

I am too busy embracing and learning precious truth that would help me grow physically and spiritually as a Christian, that I have no time to find fault on others and dwell on them. I believe with all my heart on Ellen G. White’s inspirational messages as they help me draw closer to Jesus everyday. I know I am not the only one, as there are many, many, countless people out there that have been and are blessed with her divinely-inspired messages. Praise the Lord, many people are now catching up with the health message because they realize that good health is very important. I am doing the best I can to live a healthy life as what God wants me to. Yes I am aware that, EGW at some point in her life she has struggled with her weakness on appetite, just like me and you we too have many weaknesses and struggles that hinder us to grow physically and spiritually; but what is more important is how we learn from every mistakes and failures and strive to overcome them with God’s help.

Ellen White’s living testimony is exemplary and blessing for us to learn from. Her human nature shows how feeble she was but it was God who used her as one of many instruments for us to see that we too can be perfected if we fully surrender our self to Jesus. While EGW cannot please everybody, even with her great message, she too is not exempted with mockery and rejection from people just like the experience of the faithful followers of Jesus, prophets in the Bible and Jesus, Himself.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! God bless you!

Not sure why you think its “fault finding”. It is simply presenting what has occurred. Faultfinding would be digging for faults when there are no open or apparent issues on the surface. You must remember that it is not we who claimed she was divinely inspired. It was EGW–

        • “Yet, now when I send you a testimony of warning and reproof, many of you declare it to be merely the opinion of Sister White. You thereby insulted the Spirit of God.” Testimonies 5, p. 64.

        • “In these letters which I write, in the testimonies I bear, I am presenting to you that which the Lord has presented to me. I do not write one article in the paper expressing merely my own ideas. They are what God has opened before me in vision–the precious rays of light shining from the throne.” Testimonies 5, p. 67.

        • “If you lessen the confidence of God’s people in the testimonies He has sent them, you are rebelling against God as were Korah, Dathan, and Abriam.” Testimonies 5, p. 66.

        • “The Testimonies are of the Spirit of God, or of the devil. In arraying yourself against the servants of God you are doing a work either for God or for the devil.” Testimonies 4, p. 230.

That has nothing to do with her having to please everyone. It does have everything to do with the reliability of ALL her claims. It is she who made such a bold claim and invoked God in it.

Here are well known errors with her Health Message and the citations–

        • Eating Pork causes Leprosy – Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 393, para. 2.
        • Satan Has Better Success with Women than Men! – Manuscript Releases, vol. 10 p. 76, Ms. 29, 1911, p. 13. Released by the White Estate Washington, D. C. July 16, 1980
        • If you use drugs, God won’t hear your prayers! – Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4, p. 145
        • Drinking Tea is a Sin? – Manuscript Release Vol. 20, p. 6
        • You can go nuts if you are a “Piano Tuner” – Letter 104, 1901.
        • Marital Relations Weaken Mind and Morals! – Solemn Appeal, pg. 178 (1870)
        • Eating Meat causes Cancer – The Ministry of Healing, p. 313
        • Secret Vice is a source of MANY Diseases (http://bit.ly/1fidbpN)

The excuse we commonly give is that “many physicians, preachers, and lecturers of her day gave similar lists of diseases” or healed that belief. Perhaps, so but not so fast! None of them CLAIMED the imprimatur of Divine Inspiration, thus vouching. EGW did.

At the same time, yes she may have had some good ideas; interestingly now it is being revealed she or her workers gathered them from other experts or sources of her time. Then what of the claim or in this light, the “lie” she often promulgated that she was given these things from God directly. (see quotes above)

No problem with being vegetarian that’s a personal or health choice. There is a problem with praising a health message that is also commingled with errors and the intuitions claim that it is also the “Right Arm of the Gospel”. We ought hold EGW and the Institutional leaders to a high standard especially if them invoke God in their dealings.

        Hopefully food for thought!

I have high regard on the Spirit of Prophecy and the health message, that they are in accordance with God’s words. And no matter what other people say about EGW and the messages she shares, my beliefs and conviction are firm. God is my ultimate judge.
